Basements sit at the lowest point of most plumbing systems, so when a sewer line backs up, the basement is usually where sewage appears first. Depth, finished flooring, drywall, insulation and stored belongings all affect how much work a basement sewage cleanup involves, and sewage that soaks into carpet, padding or wall bottoms often has to be removed instead of dried.
For basements in Phoenix, AZ, the process typically starts with removing sewage and standing water, then taking out materials that cannot be sanitized, cleaning and disinfecting what remains, and drying the structure thoroughly. Because water near outlets, appliances or an electrical panel can be dangerous, stay out of a flooded basement until it is safe to enter.
Finished basements take more work than unfinished ones. Carpet, padding, baseboards, insulation and drywall can wick sewage upward and hide contamination inside wall cavities, so affected sections are often cut out and replaced instead of saved. Concrete floors and some hard surfaces can usually be cleaned and disinfected, which is why the materials in your basement shape the scope of the job.
Drying and checking come last. After cleaning, fans and dehumidifiers pull moisture from the structure, and moisture readings help confirm that walls and floors are dry before anything is rebuilt. If your basement in Phoenix, AZ has a sump pump or floor drain, it is worth having them checked, because a failed pump or blocked drain can lead to a repeat of the same problem.
